Where to Stay in Tucson

Tucson is spread out, so the right area depends on what you plan to see. This guide compares downtown, the northeast, the west and the airport side by location, with no hotel rankings and no prices.

  • ★ Hand-picked, top-rated tours
  • 🌵 Desert trails and parks explained
  • ↺ Free cancellation on most bookings

Choose by location first

Most of the sights lie around the edge of the city, not in the center. Sabino Canyon is on the northeast side, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park are in the west, and the Pima Air & Space Museum is on the southeast side. Mission San Xavier del Bac lies about 9 miles (14 km) south of downtown.

So the best base is the one that is closest to your top two or three plans. Look at the hotel's street address, not its name, and compare it with the anchors below. This is an independent guide with no booking links, and it does not rank hotels. It lists no room prices, because they change with the season and the event calendar.

A Sun Link streetcar in downtown Tucson

Downtown, Fourth Avenue and the university

The Sun Link streetcar connects the Mercado San Agustín, downtown, Fourth Avenue, Main Gate Square and the University of Arizona. A full round trip takes about an hour. If you want to explore the city on foot and by tram, this stretch is the natural base.

Do not read this as a promise that every hotel here is walkable to everything. Check the map for your specific address. The bus routes from the airport help, too: route 25 goes via the Laos Transit Center to downtown and takes about 25 minutes to Laos and about 40 minutes to 6th Avenue and Pennington. Check the current timetable before you ride.

The northeast, near Sabino Canyon

For hikers who want a short start to the day.

What it is good for

The visitor center at 5700 N Sabino Canyon Road is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The shuttle runs from 9:00 am, so a base on this side lets you be at the gate early, which matters in summer heat.

Sabino Canyon →

What to check

Hotels in the foothills differ a lot in how far they are from the canyon. Use the address above as your measuring point and do not rely on a general travel time.

Mount Lemmon

The Catalina Highway climbs to Mount Lemmon and Summerhaven. The federal byway description allows 3 to 6 hours for the trip including the return, so plan it as a half-day or day trip from any base.

Mount Lemmon →

The west, near the Desert Museum

The side of town for desert scenery.

Sights nearby

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is at 2021 N Kinney Road, and Old Tucson is at 201 S Kinney Road. The west unit of Saguaro National Park is the Tucson Mountain District, also in this area.

Current detour

Kinney Road is partly closed from October 1 to November 24, 2026 for water line work. The McCain Loop is the detour, and the Desert Museum stays open. Allow extra time if your hotel is east of the closure.

Park fees

The Saguaro entrance fee is $25 per private vehicle in 2026 and covers both districts for 7 days. The east district is a separate part of the park, so plan it as its own outing.

Things to do →

The airport side, south and east

For early flights and for the museums on this side.

Airport

Tucson International Airport is at 7250 S Tucson Boulevard. Buses stop in front of the main terminal. Route 11 runs via Alvernon Way to Midtown and route 25 runs via the Laos Transit Center to downtown. The bus fares are $0 at the time of writing.

Pima Air & Space Museum

The museum is at 6000 E Valencia Road, about 2 miles (3 km) east of I-10 exit 267. A base on this side makes the museum easy. Check the distance to your other plans.

Pima Air & Space Museum →

South along I-19

Mission San Xavier del Bac (1950 W San Xavier Road) is at I-19 exit 92, and the Titan Missile Museum (1580 W Duval Mine Road) is in Green Valley at exit 69. These are day trips from any base.

Booking tips

Points that save money and time, whichever area you pick.

Compare the total price

Check what the final price includes, such as parking and any resort fee, and compare by night, not by headline rate.

Match the base to the plan

List your top three sights, plot them on a map and choose the area with the shortest combined distances. If you only visit the city center, downtown is the simplest choice.

Check event dates

The gem show season runs from January 27 to February 14, 2027. Choose your nights first, then compare rates.

Gem show →

Consider the season

Summer highs reach 101 °F (38.4 °C) on average in June. In hot months a base with good air conditioning matters more.
