Kartchner Caverns at a glance
Kartchner Caverns State Park lies at 2980 S Highway 90, about 9 miles (14 km) south of Benson and east of Tucson. The park is run by Arizona State Parks, and this guide is independent. Above ground you see mountains and grassland. The reason people come is the cave below, which you reach only with a guide. There is no self-guided visit.
Two tours are offered. The Rotunda/Throne Room tour is the shorter one. The Big Room tour is longer and is open only in the cooler half of the year. Both walk about half a mile (0.8 km) through the cave, and both come with strict rules that protect the formations and the bats. Read the rules section below before you pack, because cameras, phones and bags stay outside.

The two cave tours compared
Distances and times as listed for the tours. Prices can change, so check them at booking.
| Tour | Walking distance | Total time | Underground | Season and age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rotunda/Throne Room | About 0.5 mile (0.8 km) | 90 minutes | About 50 minutes | Check the current schedule; children under 7 pay a reduced fare of $5 |
| Big Room | About 0.5 mile (0.8 km) | 105 minutes | About 60 minutes | October 15 to April 15; minimum age 7 |
If you travel with young children, the Rotunda/Throne Room tour is the one that works. If everyone is 7 or older and you visit between mid-October and mid-April, the Big Room tour gives you a little more time underground. Both are guided only, so you cannot choose your own pace.

Tickets and fees in 2026
Two price lists are in circulation, so plan with the higher one.
Adult tour ticket
Arizona State Parks raised its fees from February 25, 2025. News reports put the adult cave tour at $30, up from $23. The state's own tour listing has also shown the older $23. Budget for $30 and confirm the final price when you book.
Children
Children aged 7 to 13 pay between $13 and $15, depending on which price list is current. For the Rotunda/Throne Room tour, children under 7 pay $5. The Big Room tour has a minimum age of 7.
Park entrance
Ask at booking whether a separate park entrance fee applies on top of the tour ticket, and whether it is waived when you hold a tour reservation. Do not assume either way.
Reservations
Reserving ahead is strongly recommended. Seats that are not reserved may be sold at the park, but a walk-up place is never guaranteed. Book your date as soon as you know it.
Rules inside the cave
Kartchner is a living cave, which means its formations still grow. The rules keep it that way. You walk with a guide the whole time, and you leave several things in the car or at the entrance.
- No photos. Photography is not allowed in the cave.
- No phones or bags. Leave them outside before the tour starts.
- No water bottles. Drink before you go in, and bring water for afterwards.
- Arrive early. Be at the park at least 30 minutes before your tour time.
These rules apply to the guided tours. Read your booking confirmation for the current list.
Bats and seasons: when the Big Room is open
The summer closure protects a bat nursery.
The Big Room is closed in summer so that the cave's bats can raise their young undisturbed. The tour listing gives the open period as October 15 to April 15. The park's conservation page describes the closure more loosely as May to October. The two descriptions do not match exactly, so confirm the dates for your own visit before you build a trip around the Big Room.
For most travelers this means that a winter or early spring visit gives you a choice between both tours, while a summer visit is limited to the Rotunda/Throne Room tour, as long as it is scheduled on your day. Check the current schedule before you drive out. The Tucson weather guide explains how hot the surrounding desert gets in summer, which is another reason to book an early tour time.
